Continued research on artificial intelligence has revealed that intelligent and cognizant machines will soon be invented. Currently, machines can identify pictures, figure out verbal commands, play games, and even drive cars better than human. Are we about to see a world where humans and machines collaborate in almost every task?

According to a report released by Universal Robots, machines will not overtake humans when it comes to intelligent tasks any time soon. However, the future of machines is bright with many experts saying that chances of machines beating humans in terms of performance and their capability to execute more tasks are high.

For this to materialize, engineers need to devise methods of teaching cobots more than just learning. Artificial intelligence has been defined as the boundary between machines and humans. It is important to evaluate the major artificial intelligence types as seen below.

·       Reactive Machines

Basic artificial intelligence systems are said to be entirely reactive. Additionally, they are incapable of structuring memories and cannot instruct present decisions from past experiences. In this intelligence type, a computer does not depend on the internal ideas of the world; rather it recognizes the world directly and acts upon what it sees.

Researchers from Universal Robots opine that manufacturers should develop more reactive machines. This, they attribute to the fact that humans are poor when it comes to programming precise derivative world for computers to utilize, also defined as the world representation in artificial intelligence scholarship.

Currently, intelligent machines lack the world representation concept. Even when they do, it is a limited and exclusive part of its specific tasks. There has been innovation of various machines which cannot accommodate future innovations. It is important to understand that such limitations mean that the machines cannot be enhanced, applied, or altered to other circumstances. Computerized thoughts lack ideas of the broader world which means that they are restricted to functioning only on tasks they have been assigned.

They are incapable of participating interactively in the world according to what experts opine about artificial intelligence in the future. Rather, they behave similarly each time they bump into the same circumstances. While this is good for guaranteeing artificial intelligence system trustworthiness, it can be disadvantageous for individuals looking for machines they can interact with and those that can provide answers to the world.

·       Restricted Memory

This section comprises of machines that are capable to use the past to determine current situations. Self-driving cars, for instance, can be placed in this category since they watch other vehicle’s direction and speed, something which can only be achieved after periods of evaluating and establishing certain objects.

The observations are included in self-driving vehicles’ preprogrammed depiction of the world. This also comprises road curves, traffic lights, and lane markings. These come in handy when the vehicle needs to execute various operations on the road such as changing lanes in order to avoid obstructing other vehicles or getting hit by nearby vehicles. However, unlike how humans can learn from experience they gain after many years on the road, self-driving vehicles are incapable of referring to the past information since it is not stored in their experience library.

·       The concept of the Mind

The concept of the mind can easily be defined as the critical divide between future machines and already existing ones. However, there is a need to deliberate on the various representation machines needed as well as define their purpose. More advanced machines are capable of creating not only world representations but also forming entities or agent representations in the world. This concept is further described as the ability to understand that worldly objects, creatures, and humans are prone to emotions and thoughts which many times influence individual behavior.

Finally

Is it possible to develop artificial intelligence structures that create ultimate representations, recall past experiences and are capable of applying the same in new circumstances? Doing so is evidently an arduous task. If artificial intelligence systems will ever outpace humans, they should be capable of establishing how best to interact with humans, seeing that they have individual expectations, feelings, and thoughts.
